Case of the Month

Meet Penny!

This month an owner called panicking when their dog swallowed a bone while they were eating ribs. They felt confident that she had swallowed it and not chewed it into pieces. She was acting normally so the recommendation was to watch her overnight and in the morning bring her in for an X-ray. She was not to feed her breakfast before she came.

On the way, Penny got a little car sick and vomited up the bone. It was a large rib bone that would likely have caused an obstruction if it started to pass into the small intestines. This was a great outcome and there are a few important things to keep in mind in the event this happens to your dog.

Bone will show up very well on an x-ray but if your pet has food in the stomach it may be harder to see. Anytime your pet is coming in for X-rays, it's always best to make sure they haven't eaten if possible.

If this bone has gotten stuck, signs of obstruction may have been lethargy, not wanting to eat or vomiting. Often pets can't even keep water down.

Anytime you think your pet has eaten something they shouldn't have, please call us. We may recommend you monitor them or we may feel it's more urgent and need them to come in immediately. Our doctors and staff are always here to help you.

Medication of the Month

Does your senior pet suffer from osteoarthritis pain? Our doctors have a great solution to help your pet regain their playful attitude and live pain free!

Approved by the FDA in 2023, Librela is a once-a-month injection given by your vet that offers lasting pain relief for you dog. It is important to note that Osteoarthritis (OA) cannot be cured; however, with Librela, your pet can live a more active life with less pain and more play! We are ready to support you and your dog through their aging journey!

Product we are loving for our pets

The product we are loving this month is an Automatic Pet Feeder!

Why do we love it?

  • The feeder uses a microchip to identify your pet and ensure they get fed. Works with multiple pets!

  • With two compartments, the feeder can dispense wet and dry food.

While your fall is only getting busier, your cat can be more self-sufficient to give you more time to enjoy the season!

Announcements

Welcome to Western Shore, Dr. Dr. Holly Mazzurco.

Caring for animals has always been a part of Dr. Holly Mazzurco’s life. Growing up her family had the best Jack Russel Terrier named Phoenix and they also had several horses and cats. Caring for a sick stray barn kitten was really what propelled her into veterinary medicine.

Being a native of Pennsylvania she attended the University of Pennsylvania to obtain her veterinary degree. This is where she developed a strong interest in shelter and emergency medicine. She went on to complete a rotating veterinary internship at the Regional Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield, VA. Since then, she has worked in local emergency and general practice animal hospitals.

Her professional interests include surgery and emergency cases. She is very excited to join the team at Western Shore Veterinary Hospital.

Outside of work she enjoys traveling and playing board games. But most importantly she lives spending time with her family and their two pets - a black lab named Yang, and their cat, Saphira.
