Vet Term of the Month

Have you ever felt like you and your vet are speaking a different language? Then let’s add some veterinary terms to your vocabulary.

Allergic dermatitis in dogs and cats is a common inflammatory skin condition triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, flea bites, or certain foods. Pets with this condition often experience intense itching, redness, hair loss, and skin irritation. In dogs, it can manifest as persistent scratching, chewing, or licking of affected areas, leading to secondary infections. Cats may exhibit excessive grooming or small scabs. Diagnosis typically involves identifying the allergen through tests or elimination diets. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms with antihistamines, corticosteroids, or specialized diets, alongside environmental control to reduce allergen exposure.

Medication of the Month

Welactin is a high-quality omega-3 fatty acid supplement designed for dogs and cats to support overall health, particularly skin, coat, and joint wellness. Derived from cold-water fish, it provides a rich source of essential fatty acids that promote a healthy inflammatory response. Regular use of Welactin can help improve dry, flaky skin and reduce shedding, as well as support cognitive and cardiovascular function. It is often recommended by veterinarians for pets with conditions like allergic dermatitis, arthritis, or age-related cognitive decline. The supplement comes in easy-to-administer liquid or softgel forms, making it convenient for pet owners to integrate into their animals' daily routine

We understand that prong collars can be a controversial training tool, but have you considered the risks of having an untrained dog on the leash?

Recently, there has been an increase in dog leash-related injuries reported by emergency rooms, especially among middle-aged women. These injuries often occur due to the sudden pulling of dogs during walks, leading to falls or accidents.

How can a prong collar help?

Prong collars are designed to improve communication between humans and dogs. While your dog might not understand when you yell "STOP!" as a car approaches, they will respond to a quick, controlled tug on the collar. This gentle correction tells them to stay still, providing immediate feedback in a way they instinctively understand.

Often used with large, strong dogs prone to pulling, prong collars apply pressure evenly around the dog’s neck when they pull. This action mimics the natural correction a mother dog gives her pups, creating a mild pinch that discourages pulling and encourages calm walking behavior.

Unlike choke chains, which can apply uneven pressure and risk damaging the dog’s trachea, prong collars are designed to distribute pressure evenly, reducing the risk of injury when used correctly.

October Pet Health Tips

As we welcome the cooler days of October, it’s important to ensure your pets stay safe and healthy during the changing season. Here are some essential tips to keep your furry friends happy this fall:

1. Beware of Halloween Hazards

Chocolate & Candy: Halloween treats are fun for us, but many of them, especially chocolate and xylitol-containing candies, can be toxic to pets. Keep treats out of reach and make sure your pet doesn’t sneak any.

Costume Safety: If you dress your pet in a costume, make sure it’s comfortable and non-restrictive. Avoid costumes with small, chewable parts that could be a choking hazard.

Doorbell Anxiety: With trick-or-treaters constantly ringing the doorbell, some pets may experience anxiety. Consider setting up a quiet space for them away from the door, or use calming products recommended by your vet.

2. Watch Out for Seasonal Allergies

Just like people, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies in the fall. If your pet is scratching more than usual, experiencing watery eyes, or showing signs of skin irritation, consult with your vet about allergy relief options.

3. Cold Weather Preparation

As the temperature begins to drop, make sure your pet is ready for cooler days. Short-haired dogs and senior pets may need extra warmth, like a cozy sweater or blanket. Always ensure your pet has a warm, dry place to rest.

4. Check for Ticks

Fall is prime time for ticks, especially in wooded or grassy areas. Be sure to check your pets after outdoor activities and keep up with their flea and tick prevention treatments throughout the season.

5. Watch Their Weight

With more indoor time as the weather cools, it’s easy for pets to gain weight. Keep an eye on their diet and ensure they’re getting regular exercise, even if it’s just a brisk walk on cooler days.

By following these tips, you can help keep your pets safe and healthy as we transition into the fall season! If you have any concerns or need seasonal advice, feel free to reach out to us at Western Shore Vet
