May 2024 Newsletter

Happy May Day, Anne Arundel County and Eastern Shore! Downtown Annapolis is known for festive May Day baskets so we think you should leash up your dogs and take a walk! Ferdinand the Bull might have loved smelling flowers but our (Non-medical) opinion is that dogs love flowers too!

Welcome to our monthly newsletter! We are thrilled you have taken the time to read! Whether this is your first time reading or you’re coming back for more after last month’s email, THANK YOU!

Case of the Month

Choosing the right size of toy for your pet is so important. Recently, we had a client bring in their 100 lb German Shepherd who was given a Kong that was intended for a smaller dog. The Kong became lodged in the back of his throat. When the kong turned, it completely occluded the airway causing the dog to choke. When it would turn just right the holes in the Kong would line up so the dog could take a breath. We were able to sedate the dog and pass an endotracheal tube through the holes allowing the dog to safely breath through the tube and prevent the Kong from spinning. While sedated and breathing, we were able to remove the kong.

Always remember to choose the appropriate size toy for your dog. This could have had a very different and sad ending for the pet and owner.

Medication of the Month

Social Media is booming with ads on probiotics for humans and the overwhelming benefits! Our medication of the month is Proviable-Forte! It is no secret our furry friends seem to have delicate stomachs, but Proviable is a great defense for your pet’s gut health! Packed with both prebiotics and probiotics, Proviable-Forte helps fortify the intestinal track.

A healthy gut in dogs and cats encourages a strong immune system and overall health. Though other variations of Proviable can be purchased online, it is important to note that Proviable-Forte is only available through your veterinarian and lucky for you, our in-house pharmacies (at Queenstown and Western Shore) carry it!

Product we are loving for our pets

Cat owners, does this look familiar? We have these in our cat exam rooms to ensure your cat has a positive experience in our office. Calming and comforting scents can fill a room of your house to allow for your cat to relax. The calming effect lessens negative behavior in your cat! Who doesn’t want that?
