Hello Summer!
As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, June brings a vibrant energy that we can all share with our pets! Here at Queenstown and Western Shore Vet, we’re excited to kick off the summer season with a host of tips, updates, and events designed to keep your pets healthy and happy.
Case of the Month
You may be thinking, “What in the world?”. This cat has Hyperesthesia syndrome. It is a condition we see in cats characterized by pain or itchiness of the skin, usually along the back and the tail area. Most pet owners notice episodes start suddenly like this or when they pet their cat, they notice the cat suddenly reacts, maybe even biting or swatting at their hand.
While some veterinarians feel that feline hyperesthesia is caused by compulsive behaviors, others suspect it is a type of seizure. This condition is diagnosed largely by ruling out other problems so it is important to talk to your veterinarian when you first notice these episodes. There is no specific treatment and the prognosis is generally good. Some medications may be tried to decrease the frequency of the episodes. Stress may also be a trigger so a plan may include ways to limit changes and anxiety in your cat’s life.
Medication of the Month
Trazodone is a prescription medication used by veterinarians to treat anxiety and behavioral issues in dogs. Initially developed for humans, it has sedative and anti-anxiety properties beneficial for pets.

Trazodone can be used for…
Anxiety: Effective for generalized, separation, and situational anxiety. For example summer thunderstorms and holiday fireworks could be events that cause anxiety.
Post-Surgical Care: Keeps dogs calm and minimizes movement post-surgery.
Behavioral Issues: Manages aggression and hyperactivity due to anxiety or stress.
Tips from the staff: Administer the proper dose to your dog 3 hours before the needed “calm time” for the best result.
Ask any of our doctors if this medication could better the quality of life for your pet!
Product we are loving for our pets
Have you wanted to limit your dog’s area to roam in your house? Do you have a generous toddler who likes to feed your dog from the highchair? Dr. Bailey knows this struggle with her daughter and Chocolate Lab, Bay. We have your solution!
This indoor pet barrier acts as an in the house “invisible fence” to keep your dog away from a particular area in your home. The radius is adjustable to meet your specific home needs.
(Tip from Dr. Bailey: put the disk (hidden to keep your aesthetic) under a cushion to keep your shedding dog off your couch, but no judgment if you want the cuddle session on the couch with Netflix and your pup. Just ignore this tip! ;)
