Vet Term of the Month

Have you ever wondered why your vet encourages you to brush your pet’s teeth?

We understand it is quite the chore, but it is worth it for the health of your pet! You can prevent Periodontal Disease.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common yet overlooked health issues in pets. It’s a progressive condition that begins with plaque buildup on the teeth, which hardens into tartar and leads to inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). If left untreated, the infection can spread below the gumline, causing damage to the teeth, gums, and even the supporting bone structure. Advanced periodontal disease can result in pain, tooth loss, and systemic health issues, as bacteria can enter the bloodstream and affect vital organs like the heart and kidneys. Regular dental checkups, cleanings, and at-home care are essential to prevent this serious condition and ensure your pet’s overall well-being.

Medication of the Month

Vet visits can be stressful for many cats, but Gabapentin is a helpful tool that can make the experience much calmer for both pets and their owners. Gabapentin is a prescription medication often used to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation in cats. Administered before the visit, it helps to ease the stress and fear that many cats feel during car rides, handling, or being in an unfamiliar environment. In addition to reducing anxiety, gabapentin can also provide mild pain relief, making it especially useful for cats with chronic conditions or sensitivities. Talk to your veterinarian to see if gabapentin is a good option for your cat’s next appointment. A more relaxed cat leads to a smoother, more positive visit!

Gabapentin is generally safe and well-tolerated in cats, but like any medication, it can have side effects. The most common include drowsiness or lethargy, which is often an intended effect to help reduce anxiety. Some cats may also experience unsteadiness or wobbliness due to mild sedation. Less commonly, digestive upset such as vomiting or diarrhea may occur, and in rare cases, cats may drool more than usual. These side effects are typically mild and resolve as the medication leaves the system. It’s essential to follow your veterinarian’s dosing instructions carefully and immediately report any unusual or severe reactions, such as extreme sedation or difficulty breathing.

We believe every pet needs to be seen for wellness check ups once a year. Let Gabapentin take the edge off your cat (and yourself) while prioritizing regular vet visits this year.

Our personal favorite is the Furbo pet camera!

A Furbo Pet Camera is a smart, interactive device designed to help pet owners stay connected with their dogs and cats when they’re away from home. Equipped with a wide-angle HD camera and night vision, it allows you to monitor your pet in real time through a smartphone app. The Furbo also features two-way audio, so you can hear your pet and talk to them, offering comfort or reassurance when needed. One of its standout features is the treat dispenser, which lets you remotely toss treats to your pet with the press of a button in the app. Some models also include barking alerts and activity monitoring, providing insights into your pet’s behavior. It’s an excellent tool for pet parents who want to keep an eye on their pets, interact with them, and ensure their well-being even from a distance.
