Veterinary Term of the Month

You may be thinking, “What in the world?”. This cat has Hyperesthesia syndrome. It is a Lethargy in pets refers to a state of decreased activity, energy, or enthusiasm. A lethargic pet may seem unusually tired, less interested in their usual activities, or reluctant to move or interact. While it's normal for pets to have quiet days, prolonged lethargy can indicate an underlying issue.

Common Signs of Lethargy:

  • Sleeping more than usual

  • Lack of interest in playing, eating, or exploring

  • Slow or reluctant movements

  • Hiding or withdrawing from social interactions

Possible Causes:

  • Lethargy can result from a range of issues, including:

  • Illness or infection: Conditions like the flu, fever, or serious diseases such as heartworm or kidney issues can cause lethargy.

  • Pain or injury: Pets experiencing discomfort may limit their movements.

  • Stress or anxiety: Changes in the environment, such as moving or new family members, can affect a pet’s energy levels.

  • Poor nutrition or dehydration: Imbalanced diets or insufficient water intake can lead to low energy.

When to Seek Veterinary Care:

If your pet’s lethargy lasts more than a day, is accompanied by other symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, or loss of appetite), or you notice sudden changes in their behavior, it’s important to contact your veterinarian promptly.

Remember, you know your pet best. If something feels off, trust your instincts and let us help ensure they’re healthy and happy!

Holiday Travel Tips for Pets

Traveling with your companions during the holidays can be a joyful experience, but a little extra preparation will help make the season bright for everyone. Here are some festive tips for traveling with pets this Christmas:

Pack Holiday Essentials: Don’t forget your pet’s favorite items, like their bed, blanket, toys, and enough food, water, and treats (maybe even some holiday-themed ones!). Bring any medications they might need and a stocking to hang when you arrive.

Dress for the Festivities: If you're heading to a colder destination, pack a cozy sweater or jacket for your pet. Booties can protect their paws from snow and salt during festive winter strolls.

Secure Holiday Cheer in Transit: Use a sturdy carrier or a crash-tested harness to keep your pet safe while traveling. Include a holiday tag on their collar with updated contact info, just in case.

Plan for Festive Breaks: During long trips, make regular stops for potty breaks, a quick walk, and maybe a holiday selfie in a winter wonderland.

Mind Seasonal Hazards: Holiday decorations like tinsel, lights, and poinsettias can be tempting but dangerous for pets. Keep travel stops and accommodations pet-safe by checking for hazards.

Research Pet-Friendly Accommodations: If staying overnight, book pet-friendly hotels or lodgings that will welcome your pet into the holiday fun. Many offer special amenities for four-legged guests.

Include Them in the Celebrations: Make your pet part of the holiday magic by giving them their own small gift or including them in family photos.
